Devore, Fiorina,Campbell Debate the Issues

March 05, 2010:

I just listened to a radio debate between Chuck Devore, Tom Campbell, and Carly Fiorina, who are competing in the Republican primary to challenge Senator Barbara Boxer in the upcoming elections.

This was a great debate, and all three handled themselves very well. They all distinguished themselves, and there are clear differences in their beliefs, and styles, and approaches to solving the ills of the day.

Chuck DeVore has an excellent resume, and many years of public service, and he is obviously intelligent, and knowledgeable, and well grounded and secure in his beliefs. I think he answered every question, or challenge, and I didn’t hear any waffling, or stuttering. He was good, and he came off well.

He is proud of his conservative credentials, and very able to defend them. While I know that Devore is a career politician, he sure lacked some of the normal political rhetoric that we are so used to hearing these days. I had the feeling you get what you see, with DeVore, and not alot of BS.

Carly Fiorina is also a very able debater. She was no shrinking violet, for sure. Her resume is weak as a politician, but strong as a business person and CEO of HP. It’s up to the reader as to whether business experience, per se, is an important factor when voting for a politician. Politics, and business are not the same thing; it’s easy for a boss, or a CEO to get things done, because they have great power over their employees. In politics, it’s just not the same thing.

She was evasive in answering hard questions, or perhaps just questions that she wasn’t prepared to handle. She would deftly slip into a generalized political polemic when she was in a spot. She came off as being a little awkward; it was almost like she wanted to shed her business persona by emulating a politician.

I think that her poor voting record will hurt her; reportedly, she has only voted in six of the last fourteen elections in California, since 2000. It makes her seem to be just another wealthy person who sees an opportunity to replace a vulnerable Barbara Boxer, and who is willing to spend big bucks to make that happen.

(Do we need another wealthy politician like Barbara Boxer ?)

Tom Campbell came off well, too. I thought he handled himself well, and even though he had some tough questions to answer about is record, he didn’t avoid answering, and I thought he defended himself very well. I think his record will hurt him, though. He supported some unpopular legislation, including tax increases, and that always hurts.

I think his record will hurt him, and I think the fact that he quit the governors race will work against him. Like Fiorina, it seems like he also saw the opportunity to unseat Boxer.

Click to hear the recorded debate. It is only an hour, and there are only a couple commercials, and it is high quality sound.

And that is just my opinion.
