On an online discussion group that I visit, an admittedly liberal fellow asked why conservatives are so against the idea of supporting Global Warming. Now, that is not really the question that he asked, but it is my interpretation of what I thought he was asking.
His question included phrases like the “Conservative mind-set”, “right-wing rhetoric”, and “Conservative point of view”, which kinda tainted the quality of the replies he received, but which I kinda ignored in the interest of giving my own opinion:
=============
When it comes to the issue of Global Warming, the ‘conservative point of view’ that so vehemently resists supporting GW, as I see it, is one based on needing to hear rational ideas and thought processes that include reasonably credible data, from credible scientist, with credible conclusions, and credible solutions.
Credibility counts. Conservatives want real facts, and are not swayed by emotion-based movies with lonely polar bears floating on ice floes, and a phony hysteria created by, of all things, a politician.
Any chance of enlisting the help of Conservatives in creating a credible global commitment to protecting the environment was lost when Al Gore, a politician, was embraced and loved by the environmentally conscience community, including climate scientists, and allowed to hijack the movement, and become the poster child, and the spokesman, of the GW movement.
It is ludicrous, yet…. that is what happened, and is happening…
And, quite predictably, Al Gore did what politicians do: he politicized Global Warming by ginning-up the hysteria, and then he monetized it to get his share.
His fellow politicians know how to exploit fear, and have used it to further their own agendas. That is evident by the fact that the usual Liberal politicians, like Barbara Boxer, and Nancy Pelosi, and John Kerry, and Harry Reid, etc, have come on board to exploit the GW fear, and pass nonsense legislation like Cap and Trade that grows the government, raises taxes through the roof, and does little for the environment.
All because Al Gore says-so… hmmmm….????? (I’d be embarrassed if were a supporter of Al Gore, and Global Warming).
The tragedy of Al Gore, and Climategate, and (I hope) the apparent collapse of the so-called Global Warming issue, is that it may destroy even common-sense environmental measures that should be explored. Thanks to the Al Gore crowd, effective and credible actions have been set-up back for many years to come.
Ardent supporters, and believers in GW, can help their cause by working to hasten the death of Global Warming, per se, and denounce, and destroy the credibility of the likes of charlatans like Gore, Boxer, Pelosi, Kerry, and Reid, etc, et al. The sooner that GW is dead, and buried, the quicker a more realistic, and viable movement can begin.
Hopefully, when the dust settles, with the death of the GW hysteria, real scientists, of which we have many, will perform real and credible research, and we can all move forward, and credibility will be restored to the scientific community, and regular folks, Conservative, and Liberal, can support the politics that will be necessary to resolve true ‘global’ environmental problems, if there are any.
And that is just my opinion.
