Shouldn’t it go without saying that a bill, any bill, should be read by our legislators, in both the House, and the Senate, BEFORE voting on it ?
The recent Cap and Trade bill passed by the House included a 300 page amendment that was added to the final bill at 3AM on the day of the vote. How could anyone, even with a large staff to help, read, and digest, and study the impact of the amendment, in just a few hours ?
It makes no sense, yet 219 of our legislators voted in favor of the bill. Just think, over half of our legislators voted for a very important, and massive bill, without reading, and studying it.
It should not have passed. At the very least it should have been delayed until all members had a chance to study the amended bill.
I’m not for Cap and Trade, but I’d sure feel better if it passed as a result intelligent study and inquiry.
I do not understand why it could not have been delayed for a more rational, and honest vote. I guess I can only chalk it up to politics at it’s worst. Since Nancy Pelosi, as Speaker of the House, was a moving force behind the Cap and Trade bill, I assume that she must have been instrumental in pushing the bill through without adequate debate.
If this is business as usual, as I suppose it very well could be, then we are doomed. Look at it this way, most of us have, or will need to, sign contracts, and agreements, from time-to-time. A wise person will read a contract, and understand it, and agree with it, before they sign it. Would you sign a contract that you otherwise agreed with, if the other party suddenly added 300 pages to it ? No way would I do it. And I’ll bet that all those legislators who voted for the Cap and Trade bill, without reading it, and studying it, would not sign such a contract in their personal life.

Hopefully, our Senators will do a better job….
Cap and Trade is now on hold; it is not dead. Health Care is now on the table, and is even a more important bill than Cap and Trade. I think that that all of legislators should pledge to read and understand the bill BEFORE they vote on it.
And that is just my opinion.
